Overview

The College of Education (COE) prepares tomorrow’s teachers, educational leaders, and researchers. COE prepares teachers, administrators, and other education personnel; provides professional development for teachers and other education professionals; disseminates information for understanding educational issues to school and community groups; and conducts basic and applied research related to issues in education.

The College of Education is committed to preparing accomplished beginning and advanced-level professionals who can advance the learning and development of their students and who are ready to become leaders in their fields. The college seeks to foster the learning and development of PK-16 students through our educator preparation programs, leadership, research, advocacy, and partnerships. Educational inequities exist on multiple levels; therefore, we aim to prepare educators with the skills and commitments necessary to ensure equity for all students in the public schools and classrooms they will lead.

The College prepares students for positions in public and private schools, higher education, and other education-related agencies. It provides a variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels preparing professionals in the following areas: educational leadership and management, educational technology, early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, special education, principals and administrators of elementary and secondary schools, curriculum specialists, pupil personnel specialists (including counselors and school psychologists), and faculty of professional education in institutions of higher learning.

Our faculty members raised the bar for research and teaching, including a focus on what has become known as the Learning Sciences, a wide-ranging modern effort within the field of education to build bridges among various related but often distinct areas of scholarship. The work going on both in the classroom and through research directly related to the Learning Sciences is changing our understanding of how we learn, and how we need to teach.

Our graduates are change-makers, ready to improve entire education systems and ensure quality education for every student, every day. Through our top-ranked institution, students find extensive practical experiences, meaningful partnerships and a strong alumni network that’s making a difference. Our mission is clear: empower educators and shape the future of education.

The College of Education fulfills its mission by collaborating with poverty-impacted, culturally diverse schools to solve real-world educational challenges and close opportunity and achievement gaps. Our distinctive method places the College’s teacher candidates, faculty, research and professional development programs inside schools, where leading-edge teaching practices are developed, tested and refined in real time. Our model prepares outstanding teachers and leaders who are change agents ready to dramatically improve the quality of entire educational systems and make excellent education a daily reality for every student in every community.

To accomplish this mission, the College of Education offers an extensive curriculum leading to academic degrees and requires faculty and students to engage in scholarship.

The College of Education offers undergraduate (B.Ed.) and graduate (M.Ed., D.Ed., PhD) degrees programs.
